The Terminator posited that human beings could fight for their ideals, for their humanity, as it were, against seemingly insurmountable odds, in the face of known horror. An dthis despite the fact that Cameron is most definitely no cinematic artist, even he was was once "on top of the world" (couldn't resist that, especially since I no fan of TITANIC) and that the second film was more upbeat.

Yes, I have always known about the Jesus Christ-John Connor connection, and then about Sarah. Geez what heavy-handed pretentious twaddle! But the first film does definitely work on some levels and surely as a supreme work of entertainment.

"This is not to even broach the subject of this series' thematic schizophrenia. The Terminator posited that human beings could fight for their ideals, for their humanity, as it were, against seemingly insurmountable odds, in the face of known horror. The film's release in the 1980s suggests latent Cold War paranoia of nuclear annihilation coupled with uncomfortable acceptance, which makes the picture surprisingly relevant and subversive in the post-9/11 era, too. Terminator 2 was far more upbeat—the future may be grim but “Judgment Day” can be averted with the coupling of humanity and machine as one force for good. “No fate but what we make,” was the 1991 picture's enormously appropriate declaration, seeing as the Cold War was melting away like so many ice cubes on a June porch and people of varied nationalities, ethnicities and histories were, in essence, rising up against a long-feared oppressor"

Well this is a terrific paragraph that rightly opines its essence and themes. Could hardly disagree.

Fine comparison there with the Roger Moore Bonds, and an aging franchise. I love love love that you wrote a whole review on TERMINATOR SALVATION and spoke very little about it! But truthfully that's really how it should be. However, you of course announce your intent at the outset with the 'contextualizing' banner.

A glorious return to form, but you never really departed in that sense!Sam Julianonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4342369910596581403.post-8330646608335745212009-06-16T18:01:15.345-07:002009-06-16T18:01:15.345-07:00Thank you very much, Tim.
I wasn't sure what ...Thank you very much, Tim.

I wasn't sure what people had written about the film. There are so many areas one could cover, but to what purpose? Perhaps the almost comical anti-death penalty and even anti-war stances the film fleetingly assume at various points while standing as the fourth entry in a franchise which has, at first possibly inadvertently, and then later quite intentionally, made the very idea of a ruthless, emotionless terminator "cool."

The original is easily the best film of the bunch, and I'm often surprised so many favor the first sequel; The Terminator is practically perfect in its focused terror and unpresumptuously svelte construction.

I find that time has been, well, not kind to T3 but at least marginally forgiving. It remains an abortion of the thematic underpinnings of the first two films, but as now the franchise haggardly continues into even more displeasing directions, it does not inspire much in the way of anger.Coleman's Corner in Cinema...https://www.blogger.com/profile/04761319284479513957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4342369910596581403.post-16339468006181588492009-06-16T03:09:41.328-07:002009-06-16T03:09:41.328-07:00yes, yes, yes. what I love is you avoided almost a...yes, yes, yes. what I love is you avoided almost all the issues that others have pointed to as the movie's great failings whether on purpose or not.

It's just really boring with a terrible script.
