Random Thought: Jumping the Gun to '09

A random thought, but perhaps not so random as it stems from all of the Inglorious Bastards talk to be found throughout so much of the movie blogosphere...

Between Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards, Cameron's Avatar and Spielberg's Lincoln, 2009 may possibly already be shaping up to be the Year of the Long-Awaited Film by Major Director. Those three films, all having taken their time in the arduous gestation process, appear to be on the horizon in that year.

Then, you add a Scorsese film, a Jarmusch film, a Mann film and a Malick film, for goodness sakes, and '09 just might be nirvana.

Wow, I hadn't even thought of that. I have such tunnel vision lately I'm not thinking much more than a couple of weeks out.

2009 could be stellar though.

Looks like it certainly could be, Craig. Of course, the future is always murky and I could see how this scenario could easily not play out, but, to quote a TV show-turned-way-overdue/too-late/unnecessary-movie-coming-out-soon, I want to believe.

Are we really getting a Malick in 2009, or is that just a hypothetical posing, Alexander?

Lots of potential there, but I always expect major delays to screw everything up. Plus, somebody's got to have a misfire in there.

So apparently I'm really cynical right now...

Tree of Life is currently scheduled for 2009, Sam, and I believe principal photography has wrapped (or at least is close to wrapping?) so the signs are probably more positive than the three long-awaited projects at the top are.

I had the same thought(s), Daniel, so I guess I've got a cynical streak, too. But on paper it still makes me salivate a little.

Throw in a Peter Jackson film, a Greengrass film, another potential Pixar classic, a Ridley Scott historical epic, a Wes Anderson stop-motion animated film, and a modern-day answer to All the President's Men (State of Play), and I WILL be in nirvana. Too bad we'll have to soldier through a particularly dry summer.

Wow, thanks for adding all of those to the 2009 pot, Itochtenhagen. Those additions of yours help make '09 look even bulkier from afar.

I also agree that at this point the summer of 2009 doesn't look very enticing. Angels and Demons by Ron Howard? Terminator 4 by McG? And I can't say I'm interested in what J.J. Abrams does with Star Trek.

And sincerely thanks for stopping by, Itochtenhagen.

Here, I do not actually think this is likely to have success.
